Blog Post #5

A technology that I learned about from someone else was the invention and development of instant messaging. Instant messaging is a form of text communication in which people can communicate via phone or computer via the Internet. Instant messaging relies on a central server to produce direct messaging between parties. After using the sources that Phoebe Willaims used, I learned a lot about the history and use of IM. It was developed by an American computer scientist by the name of Murray Turoff. Instant messaging was invented in 1971 for use by the government as a chat function.  Its original purpose was to help exchange information during times of emergency. The government was the first agency to use this sort of chat system. The purpose of using this type of messaging system has evolved over time. Not only is it used for emergencies, it is also used for daily communication between people.

"America Online" was the first platform to roll out the use of instant messaging. Once this was rolled out, it started being linked to social media platforms for increased use. We have seen an increase in technology surrounding instant messaging and chatting via the Internet. This use of technology has become increasingly popular ever since the pandemic and forced isolation. A lot of people relied on video communication and text messaging during this time. I personally used texting as a form of communication at an increased rate during this time. Instant messaging has become something we don't necessarily even think about anymore. Texting has become such a routine in our everyday lives. We are continuing to see an increase in different apps with the use of instant messaging.

Instant messaging has essentially changed our lives, both for the good and bad. Cell phone use has been a trending technology in the last decade or so. It can be inferred that this form of communication was started due to the invention of Instant Messaging in 1971.
